All five original members were veterans of the local music scene before founding EMF\, whose name supposedly stood for “Epsom Mad Funkers” (although it was widely speculated that the initials instead represented “Ecstasy Mother Fuckers”). Within two months of formation\, the group played its first gig; after unearthing a Casio sampler and sequencer in a local thrift shop\, a light techno element was added to their rock-oriented sound. \nTheir debut album\, SCHUBERT DIP\, was released in May 1991. It was certified platinum (over a million copies sold) in the US in September 1991. It had reached a peak chart position of #3 in the UK and #12 in the US\, as well as finishing the year at #57 overall. By the end of 1991\, their infectious debut single “Unbelievable” had conquered the charts on both sides of the Atlantic\, hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 in the UK. The single was certified gold (over 500\,000 copies sold) in the US in May 1991. The song was in such heavy rotation for most of the year in America\, that it finished as the #6 single overall for the year. \nFurther hit singles that succeeded “Unbelievable” included “I Believe\,” “Children” and “Lies.” \nIn 1992\, EMF returned with the Unexplained EP and the much darker full-length effort STIGMA; STIGMA peaked at #19 on the UK charts\, and the band toured extensively to promote it. It produced hit singles and EMF live set favourites\, “They’re Here” and “It’s You.” \nThe band released their final full-length album of new material in 1995 with CHA CHA CHA. After a successful European tour\, they teamed up with comics Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer on a cover of the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer\,” which reached number 2 on the UK charts. \nEMF reunited in the summer of 2001 and released a Greatest Hits CD that coincided with a mini European festival and UK tour. The Greatest Hits CD\, called THE BEST OF EMF: EPSOM MAD FUNKERS\, featured 2 discs: the first had a collection of singles and fan favorite album tracks\, along with 2 brand new tracks: “Incredible” and “Let’s Go.” The second disc had popular remixes. \nThe band were primed to write new material and tour more extensively but the sudden passing of bassist Zac Foley on January 2\, 2002 shocked the band into silence. The remaining 4 original members spent several years focusing their time on personal projects and their families. \nEMF reunited in 2007 and have been steadily doing festivals and live shows in the years since. Along with Drummer Dale Miller\, Micah Gaugh Keyboardist/Saxophone\, Bassist Alex Cox and guitarist Martin Newman make up the current line up. \nLifting their band’s name from a Ray Bradbury science fiction story\, their own life stories have also been quite fantastic. After signing to Capitol Records in 1989\, The Veldt were soon in the studio with dream-gaze guru Robin Guthrie working on their initial recordings\, playing American concert halls with Cocteau Twins and The Jesus and Mary Chain\, and recording ‘Marigolds’ with Lincoln Fong (Moose). Not long after\, they would record their classic ‘Afrodisiac’ (1994)\, produced by Ray Shulman (The Sundays\, Bjork\, Sugarcubes) and released via Mercury Records. \nThey have also collaborated with TV On The Radio\, Mos Def and Lady Miss Kier (Deee-Lite)\, and shared the stage with The Pixies\, Throwing Muses\, Echo & The Bunnymen\, Cocteau Twins\, Manic Street Preachers\, The Jesus and Mary Chain\, Oasis\, Chuck D\, Living Colour\, and Schooly D. \nThis past year has also been pretty monumental\, with highlights including sold-out tours with Phantogram and The Brian Jonestown Massacre\, a European tour\, two separate Canadian tours\, appearance at some of North America’s and Europe’s hottest psych fests\, a spotlight feature on Time Warner Cable TV and being named as east coast support for Modern English. Performing since they were children\, the Chavis brothers’ musical roots lead back to the church and southern juke-joints\, and listening to music that included gospel\, Motown and Pink Floyd. The Veldt formed in the late 80’s in Raleigh amongst the royalty of the legendary North Carolina music scene\, including bands such as Superchunk\, Archers of Loaf\, The Connells\, Dillon Fence\, The dBs\, Squirrel Nut Zippers\, and Ryan Adams. Pitchfork recently included their album ‘Afrodisiac’ in the top 50 shoegaze albums ever released. Their sound also inspired future generations of alternative artists\, including TV On the Radio. \nThis latest EP sees the band returning to their roots\, albeit with plenty of distortion\, programmed beats and pedal effects. They’ve also involved A.R.Kane\, who produced ‘And It’s You’. Borrowing the title ‘The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur’ from an E.E. Cummings poem\, this EP includes five tracks with a raging sound influenced equally by the emotional soul of Marvin Gaye\, free jazz warriors Sun Ra and Pharaoh Sanders\, various Drake hip-hop tracks\, long-term musical kin Cocteau Twins\, and their own fertile electric imagination.
