Austin is known as the music capital of the world — and Urban Heat is one of its greatest exports. The band, formed only five years ago as the brainchild of singer/multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Horstmann, has quickly become known for their fiery live shows and infectious darkwave anthems that harken back to the ‘80s with a modern sensibility. Powered by the magnetic Horstmann’s melodic baritone vocals & the pummeling rhythm section of Kevin Naquin and Paxel Foley, UH has won over fans show by show.

Appearances at major California festivals like Cruel World and Darker Waves saw Urban Heat play to their biggest audiences, with their set pointed as one of the best of the day. At home, Urban Heat has long been the talk of SXSW & graced the stage of the Austin City Limits Festival.

Now, with The Tower, we see the band at its absolute peak. Songs like the arena-ready “Seven Safe Places” and the intricately steady “Take it to Your Grave” show the band’s sonic versatility. The latter, which best exemplifies the majority of the record, is about feelings of unworthiness and fears of self-sabotage. Introspectiveness dots Horstmann’s lyrics, driving home their power and relatability.

With a headlining show at Los Angeles’ famed El Rey Theater under their belt, a North American tour, & Fall European tour with Molchat Doma, Urban Heat is ready to show the world what anyone who has seen them already knows: they’re a band that is going to dominate the airwaves for years to come.

Blood Orchid is an American alternative rock & indie pop project formed in 2019 in Miami, Florida. It was founded by multi-instrumentalist Niko Javan.

What happens when you mix brooding existentialism with a love of synthesizers and noise-rock? — Violet Silhouette may have an answer, in fact, it has all of them. Born from a tropical depression, Violet Silhouette is an American musical duo or group that may or may not sound like how dusk feels but with more reverb. Their live shows have been called “very good” and exist with the intent of giving the viewer and performer a shared catharsis. The first EP titled SEMIPERMANENTDEREALIZATION has been considered appropriate for all mood levels, intimate settings, and night driving.

Hailing from Texas, Twin Tribes is an emerging force in the darkwave scene, turning heads in 2018 with the release of their debut album “Shadows” that featured dark melodic sounds, synthesizers, lyrics about the undead, and the occult and parallel universes. They returned in 2020 with the ten-track album “Ceremony” with an evolved sound that explored love and loss while showcasing their progression as a band.

With songs that are both dynamic and introspective, they balance the darker shades of the emotional spectrum with an energy and momentum that gifts their music a powerful sense of urgency and drama. Their lyrics dig deep into the personal turmoil of love, life and loss, and have forged a new aesthetic that fuses the gothic with the romantic, viewing emotional themes through a darker lens.

As their second LP gains increasing critical and commercial attention, these pillars of the independent music scene continue to re-define what genres such as darkwave and post-punk mean in 2023.

Born and raised in Miami Florida, DJ Dino has been a staple in the South Florida music scene, and a proponent of Synth-pop and Dark Electro sounds since the mid-80s and into the more recent revival scene.

Dino is behind the long-time running show SYNTHOLOGY 101 Radio, and since the show’s inception three decades ago, Dino has gained additional recognition leading to appearances at highly recognized events within the states and abroad including Wave Gotik Treffen/Dark Affair 2023 (Leipzig Germany), SYNTHCON Synthpop Festival (Los Angeles, CA), Trans Communion v1.0 Music Festival (Houston, TX), Nekropolis (Club Lazer San Juan, Puerto Rico), and more recently Absolution Fest 2023 in Tampa Florida, to name a few.

Dino has now taken up residency at Miami’s dark underground party “Malicia Goth Nights”, making it one of the hottest monthly parties in the South Florida Goth Scene. He serves his latest discoveries and the most cutting edge in goth, minimal synth, dark wave, dark electronic, synth-punk, and resurrected obscure coffin classics for baby bats and darks alike.

Ross Ryan created Dead on a Sunday because he had always wanted to sing in a rock band. But he didn’t realize that his voice sounds a lot like that of Bob Belcher, the lead character on the popular cartoon show Bob’s Burgers. The people who caught a Dead on a Sunday TikTok noticed, though, and Ryan’s music went viral, with even the supervising director of Bob’s Burgers eventually weighing in.

“I started messing around with the TikTok thing, like, summer 2021. And you know, TikTok either goes fast or it goes slow. So it was going really slow, and I kind of backed off it a bit, mostly out of frustration,” Ryan recalls. “And then this last summer, I decided to kind of go hard at it again, because you know, it’s the number-one entertainment app, and it’s the only place that’s really breaking artists.”

He began making videos in which he re-created a popular song in the dark-wave genre, which is also the styling of his band. In one, he combined Mr. Kitty’s viral tune “After Dark” with the lyrics from Blink-182’s “Dammit,” and then uploaded the band’s performance to TikTok in October. It “was growing slowly on Spotify, maybe 100 plays a day,” he says. “Then this guy on TikTok comments on the video and says, ‘It sounds like Bob Belcher.’ I was like, ‘Is that supposed to be a good thing?’ I wasn’t mad; it was funny. I didn’t have a video to post that day, so I just took a lot of clips of us playing our last show and I tagged that comment and wrote ‘Bob-core’ over the video. And within just, like, seven seconds…it had hundreds of views. I went about my day, and when I went on TikTok later, it was at 3,000 views, and every time I refreshed, people were commenting. … I’ve never had anything that translated into fans and streams of the music just overnight.”

The video now has more than 745,000 views, and a follow-up video of Ryan dressed as Bob Belcher lip-syncing the viral audio has racked up more than 100,000. As a result, Dead on a Sunday’s debut album, Strange Days, which was also released in October, has been gaining more listens and saves day after day.

Meanwhile, the song that went viral, which Ryan titled “Dammit (After Dark),” has more than 135,000 plays on Spotify. “Every listener comes back on average about five times a day and listens,” Ryan says. “It’s boosted and grown the fan base. All my accounts on all platforms have grown.” – Westword
